So your recipe calls for dates... and your pantry says nope. Been there. The good news? You’ve got options—and lots of them. Whether you’re sweetening a smoothie, baking healthy snacks, or making energy bites, you don’t need dates to make it work.

Here are 6 of the best date substitutes I’ve actually used in my kitchen—and when to use them.
1. Raisins
Raisins are one of my go-to swaps for dates. They’re naturally sweet, super easy to find, and blend well in recipes.
Best for: no-bake bites, sweet sauces, oatmeal, and smoothies.
Tip: Soak them in hot water for 10 minutes before blending—just like you would with dates.
2. Dried Figs
Figs are chewy, sweet, and packed with fiber—kind of like dates with a bit more texture and a mild crunch from the seeds.
Best for: snack bars, healthy brownies, or salad toppings.
Tip: Figs are less sticky than dates, so if your recipe needs that "binding" factor, pair them with a spoon of nut butter.
3. Prunes (Dried Plums)
Prunes get a bad rap, but I promise they’re amazing in baking. They’re moist, soft, and have a rich, caramel-like flavor.
Best for: baked goods like muffins, cookies, and quick breads.
Tip: They add moisture to recipes, just like dates.
4. Maple Syrup (or Honey)
If you're using dates for sweetness only (not texture), liquid sweeteners like maple syrup or honey totally work.
Best for: smoothies, sauces, dressings, and baking.
Use about 1 tablespoon of syrup per date, and reduce other liquids in your recipe just a bit.
5. Applesauce
Want natural sweetness and moisture in one go? Unsweetened applesauce is your best friend.
Best for: muffins, snack cakes, and healthy baked goods.
Tip: Use ¼ cup applesauce to replace about 4 dates. It won’t give you chewiness, but it will keep things soft and sweet.
6. Mashed Banana
I love using ripe bananas when I’m out of dates. They're naturally sweet, easy to mash, and totally plant-based.
Best for: energy bites, bars, and breakfast bakes.
Note: Bananas do have a strong flavor, so make sure it pairs well with the rest of your recipe.
Quick Recap: Which One Should You Use?
- For chewy bars or snacks – go with raisins, figs, or prunes
- For sweetness in baking – try maple syrup, applesauce, or mashed banana
- For blending – raisins and prunes are best when soaked
