There’s nothing worse than building the perfect taco… and realizing your tortilla is cold and stiff. Warming them up takes just a few minutes and makes all the difference — soft, flexible, and ready to hold all your fillings without tearing. Whether you’re making tacos, burritos, or quesadillas, warm tortillas make everything taste better.
Here are my favorite easy ways to heat tortillas: no fancy tools required!

On the Stovetop
This is my go-to because it gives tortillas that slightly toasted flavor.
- Heat a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat.
- Add one tortilla at a time and warm for 20–30 seconds per side until soft and lightly browned.
- If you have a gas stove, you can skip the pan and warm them directly over the flame for a few seconds with tongs. It gives a nice smoky char.
Tip: Keep a small towel or plate nearby to stack and cover the warm tortillas so they stay soft while you heat the rest.
In the Oven
If you’re feeding a crowd, this method’s your best friend.
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
- Wrap 5–8 tortillas in foil and place the packet directly on the oven rack.
- Heat for 10–15 minutes until soft and warm.
You can do several foil packs at once — perfect for taco night with the family!
In the Microwave
When time’s tight, this quick method works great.
- Stack 3–5 tortillas on a microwave-safe plate.
- Cover them with a slightly damp paper towel.
- Microwave in 30-second bursts until warmed through.
They’ll come out soft and steamy, but don’t overdo it or they’ll turn rubbery.
Bonus: For Extra Flavor
- Brush older tortillas with a little water before heating to keep them soft.
- For crispy tacos or tostadas, add a small amount of oil or butter to your skillet and cook until golden and crisp.
- Always cover the tortillas once they’re heated — a clean kitchen towel works perfectly to keep them warm and pliable.
Julia's Tip
A warm tortilla turns any meal into comfort food. Just a few minutes on the stove or in the oven makes them soft, flexible, and ready to wrap around your favorite fillings.
How to Keep Tortillas Warm
If you’re making a big batch, here’s how to hold them until dinner’s ready:
- Wrap in a towel and place in a covered dish or foil: the towel traps steam and keeps them soft.
- Oven method (my go-to method): Wrap tortillas in foil and place them in a 200°F (90°C) oven for 10–15 minutes. Perfect if you’re making a big batch for a Taco Night.
- Use a tortilla warmer: ceramic, fabric, or microwave-safe versions all work great.
- Microwave method: stack a few tortillas on a plate, cover them with a damp paper towel, and microwave for 30–45 seconds. Keep them covered until serving.
- Use a slow cooker: line it with a damp towel and set it to “warm.”
- I don't recommend reheating on the skillet again as the tortillas will become drier and turn crispy.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Overheating – too long on the heat and tortillas will dry out or crack.
- Skipping moisture – especially for corn tortillas, a little steam keeps them flexible.
- Crowding – heat a few at a time so they warm evenly.
