A high-protein dinner under 500 calories comes down to building the plate around a lean protein and letting vegetables do the volume work, not the starch.

My Best Tips for High-Protein, Lower-Calorie Dinners
A few habits do more work than any specific recipe.
- Weigh the protein, eyeball the vegetables. Vegetables are hard to overeat calorie-wise, so pile them on. The protein is where portion size actually matters, so that is the one worth measuring.
- Double the vegetables to fill out the plate. Extra volume from vegetables fills you up for very few calories and makes the whole plate feel bigger.
- Use broth, citrus, and spice instead of oil for flavor. A splash of lime or a spoonful of broth adds a lot of flavor without adding much in the way of calories.
- Greek yogurt stands in for sour cream and mayo. Same tang and creaminess, a fraction of the calories, and more protein on top of it.
- Prep the protein in bulk. Grill or bake a big batch of chicken or shrimp once and pull from it for several dinners through the week.
High-Protein Dinner FAQs
How much protein should be in a dinner?
Most adults do well with 30 to 40 grams at dinner. It supports muscle and keeps you full longer than a carb-heavy plate.
Can a 500-calorie dinner actually be filling?
Yes, when it leans on protein and vegetables with a measured amount of starch. Volume from vegetables does most of the work.
What are the best high-protein, low-calorie foods?
Chicken breast, shrimp, white fish, egg whites, nonfat Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, and lean ground turkey or beef.
