Friendsgiving works because nobody is trying to do the whole thing alone. The host handles one big item, usually the turkey or the space, and everyone else brings a dish. That is the entire secret to it not being stressful.

This is how we run ours. A plan for splitting up the cooking, then the appetizers, sides, desserts, and drinks worth signing up for. Almost everything here can be made ahead and carried in a dish.
Assign the list, and all the host has to do is set the table.

How to Split It Up
Send around a simple sign up. The host does the main and drinks. Divide the rest so you get two or three appetizers, four or five sides, two desserts, and someone on ice and cups. Ask people to bring their dish ready to serve or ready to reheat, not raw.
Easy Appetizers and Boards
Friendsgiving grazing starts the second people walk in. A board plus one or two dips holds everyone until the main.

The Main
The host usually handles the main. A whole turkey is the classic, but a turkey breast, a glazed ham, a roast chicken, or even a big tray of salmon all count and several of them are less work. Pick one showpiece, make the gravy, and let the sides do the rest.

Sides Worth Bringing
Assign these out. All of them travel well and hold at room temperature or reheat in the host's oven while the turkey rests.

Desserts
Two desserts is plenty for a Friendsgiving. One pie or one pan dessert, plus something small to pick at.

Drinks
The host handles drinks so there is one system, not ten. A slow cooker of mulled cider and a cold option covers everyone, and put out water too.

How to Host Friendsgiving Without Losing It
- Send the sign up a week out. A shared list so you do not end up with five desserts and no sides. Claim the main and drinks yourself.
- Ask for dishes ready to serve. Reheat, not cook. The host's oven and stove are full. Anything that needs real cooking on site will not get made.
- Do the turkey the easy way. A turkey breast, a spatchcocked bird, or a rotisserie pickup all count. Nobody is judging.
- Set up a real drink station. One spot with cups, ice, a warm option, a cold option, and water. Then you are not bartending all night.
- Borrow serving dishes and chairs. Ask guests to bring an extra folding chair and a serving spoon. Cheaper and faster than buying.
- Start grazing food early. Put a board and a dip out before anyone arrives so the first hour has something to do.
Friendsgiving Questions
What should the host make for Friendsgiving?
The turkey or main, the drinks, and the space. Everything else gets assigned out. If you also want to make a signature side or dessert, do one, not five.
What is an easy dish to bring to Friendsgiving?
A cheese ball, a cold dip, a cranberry sauce, or a pan of bars. Anything that is finished before you leave the house and just needs to be set on the table.
How much food do you need for Friendsgiving?
If everyone brings a dish, you will have too much, not too little. Aim for two or three appetizers, four or five sides, one main, and two desserts for a group of eight to twelve.
When should Friendsgiving be?
Any weekend in November that is not Thanksgiving itself. The weekend before is popular because people are already in the mindset but not yet worn out from the real thing.
