These Air Fryer Sweet Potatoe Fries are the easiest and quickest side dish to make. Make as little as you need with simple ingredients and enjoy a fresh batch of flavorful crispy sweet potato fries anytime. They are very much addictive!
The best part? Just like my Air Fryer Fingerling Potatoes, these are quick to make, it only takes about 15 minutes to air fry! And they are easily customizable.
One of my favorite way to enjoy these fries is with parmesan and truffle oil - just like in this popular Parmesan Truffle Fries recipe. A must-try with sweet potato or regular potatoes. Crazy good!

Why It's Yummy
- Make ahead. To speed up the process, make ahead these fries by peeling and soaking them in cold water the night before (Store in the fridge). When ready to use, simply pat dry them, toss in spices and cook for 30 minutes and serve!
- A perfect side dish. And healthier than the regular fries! These fries are not only good for sides, serve these as a main course with a light arugula salad with some cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and olive oil-based dressing. Want ideas? Try my Crispy Cobb Salad With Breaded Chicken or get inspired by my SALAD recipe collection.
- No deep frying is needed. I kind of prefer homemade fries to restaurant ones, especially if it's done in an air fryer. First of all, it is healthier, and I know how much oil and seasoning are in them. Ad second, the texture and flavor are equally good as dining out (if prepared correctly, you are in luck!).

Instructions
Scrub the sweet potatoes and peel if desired (I like to leave the skins on). Prepare a large cutting board and a sharp knife. Trim the ends and cut each potato into about ½ inch thick wide strips.
Now turn the strips cut side down and slice each into about ¼ inch wide long strips. You can cut them wider but the cooking time will need to be adjusted (air fry for longer).
Transfer the fries into a large bowl with cold water and let soak for 30 minutes to an hour.
Pour out the water and lay the potato strips on an even surface and pat dry (they need to be really dry).
Sprinkle with seasonings and a drizzle of oil. You only need a little oil, 1 tablespoon for air frying but I like to use 1 and ½ or 2 tablespoons.
Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. I use Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer which fits 1-2 servings in the basket.
Once hot add the fries into the air fryer basket in a single layer. Leave plenty of space between each potato strip for the hot air to circulate.
They should not touch each other, this will ensure that they will be more crispy.
Air fry for 15 minutes, turning the fries in the basket once (around 8-minute mark).
Fries should be crispy, if needed fry for extra minutes. The ends may become dark if very thinly cut or the ends not trimmed enough.
If the fries will be cut too thin they will get black after the 10-minute mark, but not crispy. If not sure and doing this for the first time, I’d recommend making thicker fries, by cutting the sweet potato strips a little wider than stated in this recipe.
Air fry until the desired level of crispiness.
Remove the fries from the basket and sprinkle them with extra salt.
As you’ll be doing it in batches the first batches will become cold very quickly.
I’d recommend placing the fries on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper and transferring to a preheated oven to about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Serve hot with simple sauces like ketchup, ranch dressing and mayonnaise or my favorite dipping sauce for fries from this recipe.
Tips
- My favorite and one of the best air fryer on the market - Cosori 5.8 quart air fryer. Fits 1-2 servings in one basket.
- You can get away with only 1 tablespoon or no oil at all when you are cooking food in air fryer. However with fries you still need to add oil if you want very crispy fries.
- To keep your air fryer functioning longer, place special parchment paper air fryer basket liners at the bottom of the air fryer basket. You can even make this yourself by by cutting out parchment paper according to size needed and punching some holes in it!
- Sweet potato seasoning ideas - fries are simple dish that requires very little seasoning like salt, pepper and some paprika. Want something different? Add extra seasonings such as onion or garlic powder, cajun, cayenne pepper. One of my favorite ways is to add parmesan and truffle oil to the sweet potato fries. Once fries are cooked, add each batch to a shallow bowl and drizzle with truffle oil, and sprinkle plenty of grated parmesan. Serve right away.
- Or Fancy unsavory flavor? Sprinkle the fries with cinnamon and a little brown sugar towards the end of frying.
- In case you are looking for next recipe to make with sweet potatoes try these ultra-creamy Whipped Sweet Potatoes.
- For best results, soak the fries - I’d recommend giving your sweet potato fries a cold water bath before frying. It is not that essential but guarantees the best result and removes the excess starch. Less starch = crispier fries. Soak the fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes to -1 hour.
- No soggy fries! Another tip for a crispy exterior: sweet potato fries have to be cooked in batches. Leave plenty of space between them and use at least 1 spoonful of cooking oil.
- Sweet potato wedges can be made using the exact same method instructed in this recipe. Learn how to be a pro in cutting sweet potato wedges right here.
- Oil for frying - any neutral oil with high smoke point such as canola, peanut or avocado oil.
Freezing And Storing Instructions
Store the air fryer sweet potato fries in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days max.
Reheat in air fryer at same temperature - 375 degrees Fahrenheit or in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t add any more oil.
Overall fried foods don’t reheat well, even if made in air fryer. Even though you're using way less oil than deep frying the flavor and texture are just not as crisp after reheating as they were once when freshly cooked.
I don’t recommend freezing these either.
FAQ
I’d recommend giving your sweet potato fries a cold water bath before frying. Like regular french fries, sweet potatoes have plenty of starch, and soaking them in cold water gives you perfectly crisp fries. Soak the fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes-1 hour.
Sweet potato fries burn if they are cut too thin and the tops of the potatoes are not cut off. Also with a too high temperature in the air fryer. It's that simple!
Keep the cooked sweet potato fries warm in a preheated oven to 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit between the batches. Transfer them to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and preferably separate from each other to prevent them from becoming soggy.
