Avocado Shrimp Salsa Ingredients
- Shrimp - The star of the show in this salsa is the shrimp, which is finely chopped and cooked on high heat until opaque.
- Avocado - Chunks of avocado add a creamy factor to this spicy salsa.
- Mango - Sweet and juicy, the mango adds a tropical flair to the salsa.
- Lime - Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a bright and citrusy kick. Use fresh over bottled - the difference is HUGE.
- Jalapeno - Finely diced jalapeno adds a spicy heat to the salsa. Exercise caution when chopping jalapeños, as their oils can cause a burning sensation on your skin. Avoid touching your eyes! Personally, I rely on my OXO vegetable chopper to finely dice them without any extra contact with the oil or seeds.
- Tomatoes - Use whatever fresh tomatoes you can find in the store. I prefer using Roma tomatoes for this salsa. They're firmer and easier to chop, plus they have fewer seeds.
- Chili Powder - A sprinkle of ground chili adds a smoky and spicy flavor.
- Fresh Cilantro - If you have extra, chop it up and store it in a freezer-safe container for later use in sauces or soups.

How To Make Avocado Shrimp Salsa
Let’s make avocado shrimp salsa, your new favorite go-to party appetizer!
- Cook the shrimp in a skillet with seasonings until they turn pink, turning once halfway through (about a minute per side).
- Chop the shrimp and toss them in a large bowl with chunks of avocado, mango, tomato, red onion, cilantro, and jalapeño.
- Then, drizzle fresh lime juice over everything and season with salt and pepper as needed (yes, you need a lot of seasonings here!).
- Combine all the ingredients thoroughly, ensuring they are well-mixed.
- Then, chill the salsa in the fridge for at least half an hour to allow the flavors to blend together.
Note: Chilling is not mandatory but preferred.
Before serving, give the salsa a final stir and taste for seasoning. You can serve this salsa as a topping for tacos, a dip with crunchy tortilla chips, or even a refreshing salad.
Shrimp Salsa Variations
I love this avocado shrimp salsa recipe as it is, but there are plenty of ways to shake things up.

Here are some additions to consider:
- Peaches
- Pineapple
- Strawberries
- Instead of chopped avo, use chunky guacamole for serving
- Hot sauce
- Bird's eye chili or red chili peppers
- Bell peppers
- Orange juice

Can I Use Raw Shrimp for Shrimp Salsa?
If you want to make it with raw shrimp then it will be a slightly different recipe - a shrimp ceviche.
In traditional shrimp ceviche, raw shrimp is usually marinated in lime juice, which "cooks" it due to its acidity.
However, I've taken a shortcut by cooking the shrimp beforehand. Sometimes, I use pre-cooked shrimp to speed things up.
If you're using pre-cooked shrimp, rinse them under cold water, dry them with paper towels, and chop as necessary. You can also opt for small shrimp meat to skip the chopping altogether!
Tips For Making The Best Avocado Shrimp Salsa
- Here's a handy tip for chopping: ingredients like tomatoes, mangoes, avocados, or cucumbers can be chopped coarsely for added bulk. Ingredients like onions, chiles, jalapenos, or garlic should be finely chopped.
- To make salsa ahead of time, chop all the ingredients (except the avocados). Store them in an airtight container in the fridge. Just add the avocados and dressing right before serving. Remember, shrimp only stays fresh for about two days in the fridge, so it's best to use it fresh.
- Don't stress too much about your salsa! If you're missing an ingredient, no worries! Substitute it with something else. Feel free to experiment and have fun with it!
Storing Leftover Shrimp Salsa
If you have leftover shrimp salsa, you can enjoy it the next day. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator, lasting up to 2 days.
When ready to serve: To freshen the salsa, sprinkle a cup of lime juice over it right before serving.
This will help brighten up the flavors and give it a nice kick.
Shrimp salsa won't freeze well due to it's ingredients.
