Using the air fryer to cook sausage is my top choice for getting Italian sausage or bratwurst ready in no time! It's hands-off and incredibly quick, leaving the sausage with a beautifully crisp skin.
Whether you enjoy the air fryer sausage on its own, in a bun, over pasta, or in a traditional sausage and peppers dish, you'll find yourself preferring this method every time!

Ingredients
- Sausages - all you'll need is a pack of brats or sausages for this recipe. They come pre-seasoned, so no extra spices are required. To keep it on the healthier side opt for a high-quality sausage, preferably without any artificial flavors or colors.
- Buns - soft white buns typically used for hot dogs work perfectly here. Alternatively, you can choose sliced baguette, crusty rolls, or hoagie rolls according to your preference.
- Condiments - use deli-style brown mustard, sauerkraut and pickles for added flavor.

How To Cook Sausage In Air Fryer
- Arrange the sausages in a single layer inside the air fryer.
- Set the temperature to 350°F and cook for 5 minutes.
- Flip the sausages over and continue cooking for another 5-8 minutes until they're fully cooked, reaching an internal temperature of 165°F.
Julia's Tip
Don't Pierce Holes
Avoid piercing holes in the sausage—this isn't a potato! Piercing allows juices to escape during air frying, resulting in a messy bottom and dry sausage.
Tips
- To prevent potential smoking, especially with fattier sausages, place a piece of parchment paper at the bottom of your air fryer to catch drippings. This also makes cleanup easier!
- Air fry as many sausages as your air fryer can fit in a single layer.
- Don't wrap sausages in foil. Some recipes recommend it but there is no reason to do so. Wrapping sausages in foil in the air fryer goes against the essence of air frying. Direct placement allows fat to drip, reducing overall fat content and promoting crispiness. Foil inhibits browning and extends cooking time, compromising texture and flavor.
- Air fryers vary, monitor your sausages closely during the initial use to determine the optimal cooking time for your specific air fryer. For pork sausage, ensure the internal temperature reaches at least 160°F for safe consumption.
