Ingredients
- Frozen watermelon - You can use fresh or frozen watermelon; frozen watermelon has a nice, thick texture.
- Banana - Use ripe banana for sweetness or packaged frozen banana chunks will work too (this will make your smoothie extra thick - perfect for Bali-style smoothie bowls!)
- Frozen mixed berries - Use any berries you have; frozen mixed berry packs work great!
- Greek yogurt - Vanilla or berry-flavored yogurt can make your smoothie extra sweet and creamy. You can also use plain yogurt and add a little vanilla extract for flavor.
- Maple syrup - You can use this or any sweetener you like. You may need only a small drizzle depending on how sweet your fruits are.
- Milk - Unsweetened plant-based or regular milk.
- Garnish - Top your smoothie with fresh mint, watermelon, and berries for a fun touch!

How to Cube and Freeze Watermelon for Smoothies
- Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes.
- Next, spread the cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet, ensuring they don’t touch each other. Freeze them for a few hours until they’re solid. These smaller baking sheets are great for this.
- Once frozen, move the cubes to a freezer-safe bag or container.
- This way, the watermelon won’t stick together, making it easy to blend into smoothies or add to drinks later!
How to Make a Watermelon Banana Smoothie
Just put all the simple ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. This refreshing watermelon smoothie recipe makes two to three servings!
In the pictures below, you can see what the smoothie looks like when you use all frozen ingredients (watermelon, banana and berries), which is great for smoothie bowls!
If you want a drinkable smoothie, just add more liquid and use only one type of frozen fruit or berries.
How To Pick A Sweet Watermelon
- Always use ripe watermelon and fresh ingredients for the best flavor and texture.
- A ripe watermelon will sound hollow when you tap it and have a sweet smell.
- A ripe watermelon will have a rich green color and a dark, dull skin. Avoid watermelons that are pale or shiny.
Important! Look for a creamy or dark yellow spot on the bottom of the watermelon. This spot shows where it sat on the ground while growing.
A bigger, more yellow spot means the watermelon is riper and tastier. If the spot is white, the watermelon isn’t ripe yet.
Tips
- You won’t need a whole watermelon for this smoothie recipe. One watermelon can have up to 32 cups! Most stores sell pieces of watermelon for convenience, but if you buy a whole one, you can enjoy the rest as a tasty snack during the week or freeze for later. You can use it in more smoothies, fruity popsicles.
- Add more maple syrup or favorite sweetener to adjust the sweetness depending on how sweet your watermelon is.
- While you can use fresh watermelon and mixed berries, using frozen fruit makes the smoothie thicker and super refreshing. If you use fresh fruit, just toss in a few ice cubes to help thicken it up.
What Goes Well With Watermelon Smoothie?
Watermelon goes great with many fruits, like strawberries, bananas, mangoes, and pineapple. The more frozen fruit you add, the thicker your smoothie will be.
My favorite combination is watermelon and strawberries because their flavors combine well, letting the watermelon shine!

Storing Leftover Smoothie
To Store: This watermelon smoothie is best served right away. Cover the leftover smoothie mixture with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for 1-2 days.
To Freeze: Pour the smoothies into airtight, freezer-safe jars or containers, and freeze them for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, thaw them in the fridge overnight before serving!
If it gets too thick, add extra liquid: almond milk, coconut milk, or simply water!
Watermelon Smoothie Tips & Tricks
- If you want your smoothie to be less creamy, skip the yogurt and add more fruits or extra liquid.
- To make it thicker, add an extra cup of frozen strawberries, frozen banana, or use frozen watermelon cubes. If it gets too thick, just add some more liquid like almond milk, coconut milk, or water!

Watermelon Smoothie: FAQs
A simple way to check if a watermelon is ripe is the two-finger rule. After cutting it open, measure the space between the rind and the flesh. The watermelon should be juicy and ripe if it's about two fingers wide.
Watermelon pairs beautifully with many fruits, such as strawberries, frozen bananas, tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, mixed berries, and peaches.
For a great smoothie, use fruits like bananas, berries, or mango for sweetness and flavor. Add spinach or kale for a healthy boost, and use almond milk, coconut water, or yogurt as your liquid base. You can also add extras like chia seeds, peanut butter, or protein powder to make it more filling.
